Robert G. Pope
Robert Gilmer Pope, 86, died Saturday, Dec. 25, 2010, at Croasdaile Village Pavilion, Durham.
A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 29, at William Preston Few Chapel in Croasdaile Village. A private cremation service was held at Hall-Wynne Crematory.
He was born May 1, 1924, in Haddonfield, N.J., to the late George Embry Pope and Helen Gilmer Pope. He graduated from Lehigh University after serving as an ensign in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific during World War II.
Robert was owner-partner of W.S. Pope & Sons Cheese Co. in Philadelphia, Pa., while living in Haddonfield. He was active with the Presbyterian Church and raised funds for the Camden County YMCA. He retired to Southern Pines with his wife, Ann, and continued his charitable ways by assisting Habitat for Humanity in building homes in Moore County.
He was a true gentleman and a loving and kind-hearted man. His caring and generosity was felt by all who loved and knew him.
Robert is survived by his wife of 62 years, Ann Tilden Pope; his sister, Jean Franz, of Bethlehem, Pa.; two sons, Mason Gilmer Pope and wife, Kathleen, of Voorhees, N.J., and Richard Tilden Pope and wife, Kathy, of Jamestown; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandson. Robert was preceded in death by his older brother, Walter Scott Pope.
